Once in the barracks, I peeled down to what I was born with, threw away the underwear and socks I had been wearing for eight days, and hit the shower. I think I stayed in the shower for more than an hour. I can't remember when a simple thing like that shower gave me a more refreshed feeling. I put on a clean uniform with my new gunner's wings and went to the Orderly Room to see if I could get a pass for town. Soon I was on the bus with a lot of other GIs, heading for the big city. When we arrived, I got off the bus and started walking.
Since we were taking turns in alphabetical order, I was to be number four to take my position at the bombsight in the nose of the aircraft. We were each to drop three 100-pound bombs from an 8,000-foot altitude. The bomb dropped closest to the target would be our score for the day. With three cadets to drop ahead of me, I used the time to study my notes and my textbook on the Norden bombsight. Finally, it was my turn to take a position in the nose. Our bomb run was very smooth that day. Bending over the bombsight to line up the target with the cross hairs, I opened the bomb bay doors and kept backing off the cross hairs until we reached the aiming point that I had figured would give me a good score.
Tom Wilcox, a fellow evader and author of his own story, One Man's Destiny, took the time to edit completely and provide suggestions. Reading Tom's book inspired me to write my own. At weekly readings before fellow members of the Trinity Arts Writers' Associates (TAWA), their critiques and suggestions were very valuable. Jack Fryrear and Jeff Buehner, who edited my manuscript from beginning to end, provided very worthwhile assistance. Dr. David MacKena, my department head when I was teaching at the University of Texas at Arlington, provided invaluable editing and counsel.
